Robert Raburn came to the East Bay in 1979 to study transportation and urban geography under the late
James E. Vance Jr. at UC Berkeley where he received a doctorate degree. He taught geography and urban planning for a decade at San Jose State University, and on behalf of Hispanic voter groups, served as an expert witness and drew political redistricting plans adopted by the US Department of Justice.
For the last 18 years he has been a leader in transportation advocacy, building respect and growing
an inclusive constituency for the nonprofit East Bay Bicycle Coalition. From getting the bike path on the new East Span of the Bay Bridge, to replacing the “world’s shortest freeway” near Lake Merritt in Oakland, Robert’s involvement has resulted in significant accomplishments. Robert helped draft successful local, county and regional ballot measures that transformed the Fruitvale BART Station and added a parking structure, in addition to increasing bicycle and pedestrian safety near other BART stations. He chaired the Measure B Citizens Watchdog Committee to ensure the transportation tax funds were spent as promised to the voters. His ideas for Safe Routes to Transit, Routine Accommodation, and reform of CEQA Guidelines are now adopted programs and policies.
As a grassroots activist, Robert volunteers with the Dimond Improvement Association. He has
helped garner $2.6 million in regional transportation funds for transit, pedestrian and bicycle improvements
along Fruitvale Avenue. The resurrection of the Dimond District serves as a model for citizen involvement
in building communities.
Robert has been acknowledged for his many community contributions and received the
Clean Air Champion award from the Bay Area Air District in 1995; the Stride & Ride award
from the California Bicycle Coalition in 2003; and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission’s
Excellence in Motion award in 2004.
